How to sign a PDF without uploading it

Someone emails you a lease, an NDA or a freelance contract and asks you to "sign and return". The usual options are bad: print-sign-scan wastes half an hour, DocuSign wants a subscription, and the free "sign PDF online" sites upload your contract — with your name, address and salary in it — to their servers.

There's a fourth option: sign it in your browser, locally.

Sign it in under a minute

Is a drawn signature legally valid?

For most everyday documents, yes. Under the US ESIGN Act and the EU eIDAS regulation, simple electronic signatures are legally recognized for the bulk of ordinary agreements — leases, freelance contracts, internal forms, permission slips. What matters is the intent to sign, not the ink. For notarized documents, court filings or high-value transactions, check what signature level the receiving party requires; some demand certificate-based digital signatures, which are a different thing.

Tips for a clean signature

• On a laptop, sign slowly — trackpads reward smooth, deliberate strokes.
• On a phone or tablet, use your finger; it's usually closer to your paper signature.
